At Holy Trinity, we believe it is important for every child to read and for every child to be read to.  Every class has a timetabled story session, where children are given the opportunity to listen to stories to simply enjoy the ‘Magic of Reading’.  Our Magic of Reading Spine has been carefully developed to include stories and poetry that we believe children will love, including old favourites, new and bold authors, diverse characters and stories that shine a light on emotional literacy and healthy relationships. 

Our Magic of Reading Spine is built upon books that we feel are worth reading and re-reading.  Throughout the week, we bring stories to life with expression and enthusiasm, and extend and deepen children’s vocabulary so that they can understand the books they will soon be able to read for themselves.  We plan these sessions specifically and systematically to help children to get to know the story really well: the plot, the characters, and their actions and motives.  Within these sessions, we also explore new language from the story, specifically selected to develop our children’s understanding of each word in the context of their everyday lives.  

We strive for all of our children to develop a habit of reading widely and often.  Our children have access to high quality and diverse texts that they can read for pleasure and enjoyment in our comfortable classroom reading areas.  Here our children can browse the best books, revisit the ones that teachers have read to them and borrow books to share with their families at home.
