Reading Beyond Phonics

Our children not only get off to the strongest start with their phonics and early reading, but we also place a huge emphasis on the other components of reading: Communication and Language, Reading Comprehension, and Reading for Pleasure.  Once pupils have completed the Read Write Inc Programme successfully, they are exposed to daily whole class reading sessions.  Our Reading Beyond Phonics Curriculum teaches high quality active reading, understanding of vocabulary and provides lots of opportunities to develop key comprehension skills.  We place a great emphasis on building pupil’s reading fluency so that they can access and understand the challenging texts on our reading spine.  In our Reading Beyond Phonics lessons children develop their understanding of vocabulary by listening to, reading and discussing a wide range of engaging texts, as well as learning specific comprehension skills at an age-appropriate level.  Our children study a wide, diverse range of fiction texts, poetry and non-fiction texts, which exposes them to a huge range of authors, genres and writing styles.

The structure of the teaching sequence can be viewed in the documents at the foot of the page.

Reading at Home

To support your child in their development of reading, we recommend that you spend at least 10 minutes per day reading with your child.  This can be a combination of you listening to them read their school book or them listening to you read a story book.  The sharing of reading is a valuable experience for you and child as it gives you the opportunity to discuss new vocabulary as well as characters, themes and even facts that a range of books can offer.
